ACK Maseno Mission Hospital

-ACK MASENO MISSION HOSPITAL STORY-

The ACK Maseno Mission Hospital began as a small Mission of the Anglican Church (then Church Missionaries Society) to provide spiritual sustenance and corporal healing to residents of this area of Western Kenya. It was started in 1906, outdoors under a fig tree. The Luhya word for fig tree, Omuseno, was “Westernized” to Maseno by the early missionaries. Over the years, with the support of the Anglican Church, first a clinic building was constructed, then an Out-patient department founded, then several ward buildings, then an operating theatre and, when X-ray became commonly available, an X-ray facility. And then it was a hospital!.

The Government of Kenya took over the support in the form of annual grants alongside other church hospital, but in 1980s the general economy of Kenya suffered decline and the Government withdrew its support to all Mission Hospitals. Maseno Hospital included. This meant that fewer of the community could afford hospitalization.

By the 199Os, the Hospital could not support itself on patients income alone. Buildings and infrastructure began to fail for lack of adequate maintenance. Drugs and supplies became short because of a combination of inadequate finances and mismanagement. In 1998, a new bishop, Bishop Simon Oketch , took over the Diocese of Maseno North and started reorganizing the Hospital’s management. In 2002, a new team of managers was put in place and since then the Hospital has improved remarkably.
